2021 – 07/09 The IRS is in the process of issuing a four-part series of information releases revealing its list of “Dirty Dozen” tax-related scams for 2021. Its latest release discusses tax-related scams involving email, social media and phone calls. Focusing specifically on social media scams, the IRS said that “these cons may involve sending emails impersonating the victim’s family, friends or co-workers.” Social media scams have also led to tax-related identity theft. “The basic element of social media scams is convincing a potential victim that he or she is dealing with a person close to them that they trust,” the IRS noted.
